Bookkeeping Jobs – Key Skills and Requirements


Bookkeeping jobs are in demand because any business that generates money will need someone to manage all the financial transactions. As the name suggests, a bookkeeper keeps the books or financial records of a company in order.

Bookkeepers usually never have to face lack of demand or employment opportunities. The problem is the challenged faced of gaining a lead on the thousands of people like you who wants a successful career as a keeper of the books. You need have an edge to make employers choose you over the others clamouring for a chance to prove their bookkeeping skills.

It does not take much to secure bookkeeping jobs. In truth, you do not need a bachelor’s degree to pursue this career path. All you need are the right mathematical skills and attention to detail and you should be good to go. Of course a degree will make employment easier to attain but then again, it is not a necessity. Since programs are made to make a bookkeeper’s life easier – with excel and specialty programs like Quickbooks, it shouldn’t be hard to learn the basics and get the hang of the many tasks.

Speaking of tasks, what are the demands for bookkeeping jobs? There is a very thin line between the tasks of a bookkeeper and an accountant. A bookkeeper handles the day to day transactions and record keeping. An accountant on the other hand looks at the over all report of the bookkeeper and generates financial statements and analyzes the company’s profit and losses.

Below is a list of areas of responsibilities that bookkeeping jobs entail:

1. Accounts Receivable – This involves the documenting of all income statements and sales invoices. It basically takes note of all the additional monetary assets of the company for the month.

2. Accounts Payable – A bookkeeper is responsible for releasing money to pay off any supplier or need that a company will have to spend. All official payments in behalf of the company should be taken care of.

3. Bank Reconciliation – If there is any fraud in the company, it is normally reflected in the bank statements. It is part of a bookkeeping job to ensure that all deposits and withdrawals will balance out in the end.

4. Inventory – Not all businesses have inventories but if you happen to fall on a company that has one, then it is also your responsibility to track each piece that goes in and out of the warehouse or storage room.

5. Payroll – Bookkeepers must be able to take care of the payroll on a monthly or semi monthly basis and at the same time implement any government mandated deductions. Often, employers are not aware of this so it is the job of a bookkeeper to ensure that this is properly met.

 

Bookkeeping jobs may be needed by any company but their tasks may vary depending on the nature, scope and size of the business. If you are lucky and you land yourself in a big company, you might find yourself handling only one of the above mentioned tasks. But if not, then consider yourself lucky still since you will always be practicing everything that you have learned and thus will keep improving your skills as you move along in your career.
